1Introduction
Open Lantern is a consent-based accountability tool used within faith-based missions. It is installed on a member's Android phone with their agreement, and it reports a narrow, fixed set of information to that member's designated mission leader.
This policy explains what Open Lantern collects, what it will never collect, how that information is used, and the choices you have. It applies to everyone who uses the Open Lantern device app and admin portal. If anything here is unclear, please ask your mission leader or contact us using the details below.
2What we collect
Open Lantern collects only the following, and nothing else:
- Installed app names. The names of the applications installed on the phone.
- Daily foreground usage time per app. How many minutes each app was actively on screen each day.
- Whether Open Lantern is active. A simple signal that the app is installed and reporting, so silence can be noticed.
That's the complete list. Open Lantern does not collect any other data from the device.
3What we never collect
The following are never accessed, recorded, or transmitted by Open Lantern. This is built into how the app works — it is not a setting a mission leader can turn on.
- Messages, emails, or call logs
- Photos, videos, or files
- Browsing history or search history
- GPS or location of any kind
- Keystrokes or anything you type
- Screen content or screenshots
4How data is used
The information Open Lantern collects is shared only with the designated mission leader for your mission, so they can support your accountability goals. It is used for that purpose alone.
We do not sell your data. We do not use it for advertising. We do not share it with third parties, other members, or anyone outside your mission's leadership.
5Data retention
Usage records are kept for a limited period — by default, six months — after which they are automatically deleted. Your mission can choose a shorter retention period.
When a member is removed from a mission, or withdraws their consent, their usage data is deleted. Reporting stops immediately at the moment consent is withdrawn.
6Your rights
Your participation in Open Lantern is voluntary and remains your choice.
- Withdraw consent anytime. Open the app and choose to withdraw. Reporting stops right away, and your leader is notified.
- Request deletion of your data. Email privacy@openlantern.app and we will remove your records.
7Contact
For any question about your privacy or this policy, email privacy@openlantern.app. We respond within one business day.
8Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that affects what is collected or how it is used, we will update the date at the top and notify enrolled members through the app before the change takes effect. The current version always lives at this page.
